Dangers of Obesity
Kitties that are overweight or obese face several serious health risks. Cancer, diabetes, bone/joint disorders, cardiovascular disease, and liver disease are just a few of the medical problems obese kitties can develop. Overweight kitties are also at a higher risk of having complications from surgery or anesthesia; skin trouble; and reproductive issues.
Preventing Obesity
It’s probably safe to say that you won’t have much luck convincing your furball to do laps around the kitchen, so it’s up to you to keep Fluffy active. Tempt your kitty into moving with fun, interactive play sessions. Even just a few minutes of exercise each day can be beneficial!
Diet
Diet of course plays a huge role in your kitty’s weight. Ask your vet to recommend a good nutritional plan. Portion sizes are also important. Just eating a few extra calories a day can cause Fluffy to pack on the pounds.
Snacking
Just like people, kitties sometimes snack when they are bored. Make sure you are offering your feline buddy plenty of toys to keep her entertained while you’re at work. A good window view can also be beneficial. Cats can spend hours just watching birds and squirrels! We know, it’s hard to resist that furry face, but don’t overindulge Fluffy with fatty treats and snacks. If you want to pamper your feline pal, offer toys, cuddles, and the occasional empty box.
Losing Weight
Do you know or suspect that your cat needs to lose weight? Don’t adjust Fluffy’s diet without checking with your vet. Kitties have to lose weight slowly in order to stay healthy. Crash diets are very, very dangerous for cats! Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
