Reasons to Consider Adopting a Senior Pet

Did you know that November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month? Older pets are super cute, and can make wonderful friends and companions. In fact, an aging pet may be the perfect match for you! Below, a Coon Rapids, MN veterinarian discusses the benefits of adopting a senior pet.

Find The Perfect Match

Younger pets need lots of exercise and stimulation. If vigorous walks or games of fetch aren’t really your thing, consider getting an older pet. Your furry pal may be quite content to nap on your lap or at your feet while you’re reading or watching a movie.

Less Training

Older pets have often been pets before, and know the do’s and don’ts of being a good pet. Many of these pets are already trained. Being able to skip housetraining is definitely a big plus!

Calmer Demeanor

Senior pets are much calmer than younger animals. A sweet older dog may be content to just plod faithfully along beside you on his walks, rather than jerk you around trying to get to that feisty squirrel across the road. And while cats of all ages are, well, a bit sleepy, senior kitties spend even more time napping than their younger cohorts. There’s nothing cuter than watching an old pet dozing peacefully in a sunbeam!

Give A Second Chance

Senior pets are just as cute and lovable as baby animals, but these sweet furballs are often passed over in favor of puppies and kittens. In fact, older pets often have a very hard time finding homes. By adopting a senior pet, you’re giving an animal in need a second chance. Knowing that you’ve helped an animal is a truly rewarding and beautiful feeling.

Shorter Commitment

Adopting a pet is a long-term commitment. If you bring a puppy or kitten into your home, you’re signing on for well over a decade of pet parenting. If you’re not certain whether you should make that sort of commitment, consider helping an older animal instead.

Love

Senior pets are just as loyal and loving as younger pets. Many of these wonderful pets understand that they have been rescued, and repay their saviors with unconditional love and devotion. What better gift is there than an animal’s love?
