7 Great Ways to Help Your Dog Beat the Heat

Summer is almost here! It’s probably safe to say we have some sweltering weather around the corner. While many dogs love summertime, the heat can be very dangerous for them. After all, Fido is wearing a fur coat! Read on as a Coon Rapids, MN vet offers advice on keeping your canine buddy cool this summer.

Water

Making sure Fido always has fresh, clean water is very important! You may want to get your pet a doggy fountain or an automated water dispenser to ensure that his bowl never runs dry. On really hot days, you can drop an ice cube into your pup’s bowl.

Summer ‘Do

Brushing your furry pal regularly will remove dead fur and dander from his coat, which will help him stay cooler. Many dogs are more comfortable with short, cool haircuts in summer. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a good option for every dog. Some of our canine pals’ fur actually insulates them from the heat. Ask your vet for advice.

Puppy Pool

Do you have a yard for your pooch to play in? Add a kiddie pool for Fido to splash around in on hot days. Your pet may also enjoy playing in the spray from a hose.

Hammock Bed

Hammock beds stay cooler than regular beds, as they allow air to flow beneath them. They are also easy to clean, as you really just need to hose them down once in a while. This would be a great addition to a back yard!

Cool Treats

Who doesn’t love an ice cream on a hot day? You can get doggy ice cream at many pet stores and supermarkets. Or, if you like cooking, you can also make your own. Just be sure to stick to ingredients that are safe for our canine friends. (Tip: put some kibble and cut-up dog treats in in ice cube tray, pour sodium-free broth over them, and freeze. Instant tail wags!)

Swimming

Some pooches absolutely love swimming! If your pet is one of them, treat Fido with a fun trip to a lake or pool. Just be sure to put your furry buddy’s safety first: never leave your dog unattended near water.
