Caring for a Grouchy Cat

If there’s one thing we know about cats, it’s that they all have their own purrsonalities, and are full of adorable quirks. Some of our feline pals are very lovable and cuddly, and want to be petted or held 24/7. Others? Not so much. If you have a furry little curmudgeon on your hands, read on! A Coon Rapids, MN vet discusses caring for a cranky cat in this article.

Veterinary Care

Make sure your pet sees the vet regularly. If Fluffy has only recently started being a grouch, she may not be feeling well. If your kitty gets the all-clear, then at least you know your pet is healthy.

Playtime

Just like people, cats sometimes have pent-up anger or anxiety. Playing with your kitty regularly can be very helpful with this. Pouncing on a catnip toy, or chasing after that elusive red dot will allow your feline friend take her aggression out in a healthy manner, instead of by attacking you.

Stimulation

Cats may spend a rather excessive amount of time sleeping, but they still need entertainment when they’re awake. Make sure Fluffy has plenty of toys to play with. A good window view is also a must. Kitties love watching birds and squirrels! If you leave your cat alone, turn a TV or radio on: the background noise will soothe her, and keep her from feeling so lonely. If you’ll be out after dark, leave a light on as well. No one wants to sit alone in a dark, quiet house.

Companionship

Never try to force attention on a cat that doesn’t want to be held. Some kitties just prefer to be admired from a distance! Fluffy may also be purrfectly content to sit beside you on the sofa … as long as you don’t touch her. The key is to just let your feline pal decide if and when she wants to be petted.

Safety

Sometimes cats act grumpy when they feel threatened. If you suspect that Fluffy is defensive, make sure she has a place to hide in every room. This can be a spot behind the couch, a cat tower with an enclosed level, or a place under the bed. The point is just to make sure your pet always has a place to retreat to.
