Choosing the Right Cat Tower

Have you been considering getting a pet tower for your feline friend? Cat towers are great for kitties. They benefit Fluffy in many ways, offering her a scratching post, napping spot, jungle gym, and a high vantage point. They also give your furball the perfect spot from which to snag your sleeve as you walk past, and to practice that smug, superior expression cats do so well. Kitty towers are not one-size-fits-all, however. In fact, there are quite a few things to keep in mind when shopping for pet furniture. Below, a Coon Rapids, MN vet discusses picking the right cat tower.

Kittens are very curious and playful little furballs. In fact, if you have a baby feline, you probably have a tiny, adorable ball of mischief on your hands. Keep little Fluffy entertained by getting her a cat tower that incorporates toys and promotes playful activity.

Senior Cats
As your cat ages, jumping and climbing will become more difficult for her. If Fluffy is in her golden years, get her a kitty tower with multiple levels. The lowest level should be close to the ground, so she can use it as a step.

Shy Kitties
Do you have a scaredy-cat on your hands? Shy cats love to hide, as they are often uneasy out in the open. Get your timid pet a tower with hidey-holes. Don’t be surprised if you often see two eyes looking back at you from the enclosed space!

Multiple Cats
Do you have multiple kitties? Cats can get along quite well with one another, but our feline friends are also prone to bickering. Your cat tower should have at least as many levels as you have kitties. Here’s an interesting tidbit: the furball that takes the top spot is the boss cat, while the one in the middle is further down in your feline friends’ pecking order. The cat on the bottom is the lowest-ranking kitty.

Basic Tips
When choosing a cat tower, be sure to pick one that is sturdy, so it doesn’t wobble. If Fluffy’s tower falls over on her, she may become scared of it, and stop using it. Also, for extra purrs, put the tower before a window with a good view.
