Keeping Your Cat Active

Is your cat sleeping right now? There’s a good chance that the answer to that question is yes. Our feline friends certainly do love their beauty rest. In fact, these drowsy little furballs can sleep up to 20 hours a day! Although Fluffy’s sleeping predilection is super cute, it also makes it easy for her to gain weight. But how do you keep your kitty moving? A local Coon Rapids, MN vet offers some helpful tips in this article.

Playing is great for both Fluffy’s health and her well-being. Provide your cute pet with plenty of fun toys. Kitties like to keep their playthings under chairs and sofas, so remember to check beneath your furniture every now and then. Cats all have their own tastes, so you’ll want to experiment a bit to find out what your feline buddy likes best. Catnip mice and feather toys are always good options. You can also get your kitty a robotic mouse or an automated laser pointer.

Fun Furniture
Cats really benefit from having some things they don’t have to share with their human buddies. Get Fluffy a fun kitty activity center or a cat tower. These things will encourage your furry friend to pounce, jump, and climb. (They’ll also encourage her to snag your sleeve with her paw as you walk by, but that’s another topic.) If your furball likes high places, consider getting her some wall-mounted furniture. This is a great option for people in apartments!

One of the best ways to keep your furball moving is to play with her regularly. Spending even just a few minutes a day holding a laser pointer for your kitty to chase, or dangling a feather toy in front of her, will help keep Fluffy fit. Plus, it will be fun for both of you!

Leash Walking
This one is definitely not the right option for all kitties. However, some cats really like taking walks! Be prepared to spend some time training. Start by letting Fluffy wear her leash in the house, until she gets used to it. For safety reasons, you’ll want to supervise your furball closely during this phase. Once your kitty has accepted the leash, take her for a spin in the yard! Ask your vet for more information.
